Lip fillers are a popular way to improve the appearance of your lips, but there is an important healing process after the procedure. Here’s what you need to know about the lip filler healing timeline, from day one to day seven and beyond.

There are different types of lip shapes and various methods of enhancing their natural shapes. Lip injections with dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid fillers) can be used to enhance different lip shapes to give a plumper appearance to both the top and bottom lips.

For people with thin lips lip, lip liners were previously used to draw wide lips. However, with the advancement of technology and after FDA approval, hyaluronic acid fillers are now commonly to shape the lips. Similar hyaluronic acid fillers are also used to soften the nasolabial folds, improving volume loss, and enhancing the facial features without plastic surgery.

Plumping lip procedures are very common, however heart-shaped lips have become one of the most requested lip shapes. By enhancing the lip shape, the lip is plumper and the lip color is better enhanced.

Day 1 – Consultation and Procedure.

Before undergoing any lip filler procedure, it is important to have a consultation with your chosen practitioner or plastic surgeon. At your consultation, the practitioner should take time to explain the process and answer any questions you may have. During the procedure itself, the area should be numbed beforehand with anesthetic. The practitioner will then inject hyaluronic acid (HA) gel into specific points on your lips to shape and add volume. After this is done, ice can be applied to reduce any swelling and discomfort.

On the first day, you may notice some mild swelling and redness. It is important not to touch your lips until they have fully healed. Try to avoid any stressful activities that will involve facial expressions and minimize eating/drinking as well. It is also recommended that you apply a cold compress intermittently throughout the day as needed for comfort. Additionally, start taking any medications prescribed by a doctor before the procedure if necessary.

Day 2-3: Swelling and Bruising Peak

After two to three days, the swelling and bruising from your treatment should peak. At this stage both your upper lip and bottom lip may still feel tender, so continue applying cold compresses for 10-15 minutes every few hours. It’s also important to be gentle with the area as your lips heal and avoid any strenuous exercise or activity that could cause further irritation.

Days 4-5: Go Back to Normal Activities

On days four and five, you should be able to return to normal activities. The tenderness or tightness may still remain, but you shouldn’t experience any actual pain at this point. Your lips will continue to get back to normal size and color, although it’s completely normal for lips to remain slightly swollen for up to two weeks after the treatment.

At this point in the healing process, it’s important to take extra precautions when looking after your lips. You should continue to avoid any physical exercise that might cause trauma to your lip area, and refrain from problems like eating super hot or spicy food which could cause irritation. Proper hydration is also key in helping your lips heal, so make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.

Day 7-14: Signs of Recovery Begin

At this point, you should start to be able to see a difference in your lips, with most signs of swelling or bruising starting to subside. Your lip fillers will be settling in, and you may still feel some tenderness or tightness, but the treatment should now be much more comfortable than before. Anybody around you should not notice any visible signs of filler in your lips at this stage.

Though you may still have some minimal swelling or bruising, or a bit of tenderness, your lips should look softer and smoother after this period.
